We can be very reluctant to talk about suicide – which means that many of us harbour all sorts of misunderstandings, or unanswered questions. The best way for us to reduce stigma and to increase understanding is for us to talk more openly. Mind’s new video ‘Talking about feeling suicidal’ provides valuable insight into the thoughts and feelings of four people who have overcome suicidal feelings in the past.
The video should be viewed with caution, it may stir up difficult feelings for people vulnerable to suicidal thoughts and feelings. For this reason I would not recommend it, in its entirety, for use as a classroom resource as we are not always aware of how many vulnerable pupils are in the room. However, the discussion from about 5 minutes in about what can help when you feel very low might be worth sharing with care.
The video could provide a good discussion starter for a brief staff INSET or parent workshop. If you choose to share this video, you should always ensure you also signpost sources of support for anyone who is feeling suicidal or is concerned about someone in their care.
